Tax-Deductible Gifts

Giving to Heifer is already a great experience – Helping families all over the world to achieve self-sufficiency and the ability to eventually help others is outstanding all by itself. And a bonus – when tax time comes around, charitable giving can give back to you. Giving a Heifer gift is the gift that keeps on giving, both to the families we assist in our projects all over the globe and to you, the donor, when it comes tax time.

If you make a charitable Heifer gift of more than $10 by 11:59 p.m. PST on December 31, 2010, you can file it on your 2010 taxes as a tax deduction.

Tax-Deductible FAQs:

Are donations I make to Heifer tax-deductible?
Yes. As a non-profit organization, Heifer International is exempt from federal income taxes under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Consequently, your contributions to Heifer are tax-deductible under U.S. tax regulations.

I made a donation to Heifer. How do I claim the tax deduction? Do I need a special form from Heifer?
Heifer issues tax receipts for gifts of $10 or more; no special claim form is needed. You should be aware that, according to IRS regulations, we must credit the entity listed on the check or credit card as the actual donor(s). Therefore, if you send a check from your personal account, we will be required to credit you with the gift. We want you to be aware of this because the receipt will be issued appropriately in accordance with IRS rulings.

What is Heifer’s Tax Identification Number?
The Heifer tax identification number is 35-1019477.

I'm Canadian and would like to donate to Heifer. What do I need to be aware of?
Currently, Heifer International does not have a local office in Canada. Therefore, we prefer that contributions to Heifer be made in U.S. dollars. However, we do accept all forms of legal tender as well as the following credit cards: Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express.

Of course, when using your credit card, the billing company will convert your U.S. dollar transaction amount to Canadian dollars. Exchange rates change often; therefore, a local financial institution would be the best source for dollar conversion information. To check exchange rates online, click here.

Heifer issues tax receipts for gifts of $10 or more; however, Heifer International is a United States charitable organization and is not registered in Canada. Please consult your tax advisor for information on the tax laws that apply to your gift. Helpful information is also provided at the Canada Revenue Agency website.
