Why Should I Invest In Heifer?

In 1944, the first shipment of 17 heifers left York, Pennsylvania, for Puerto Rico, going to families whose malnourished children had never tasted milk.

Why heifers? These are young cows that haven't yet given birth – making them perfect not only for supplying a continued source of milk, but also for supplying a continued source of support. That's because each family receiving a heifer agrees to "Pass on the Gift" and donate the female offspring to another family, so that the gift of food is never-ending.

This simple idea of giving families a source of food rather than short-term relief caught on and has continued for almost 70 years.

Since 1944, the total number of families assisted is 13.6 million—more than 70.5 million men, women and children. In 2009, a total of 1.63 million families were assisted within the four program areas in which Heifer operates.

We say that a donation to Heifer is an investment that keeps giving for generations. People in the know already see that and are helping Heifer when they can. We've teamed with some corporate and governmental powerhouses to make a difference all over the world for families in need.

With the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, we've created the East Africa Dairy Development (EADD) project, which since 2009 has mobilized 47,445 dairy farmers into farmer groups so they can form business associations and establish chilling plants that will help get their milk to market.

Elanco and Heifer have joined together to help families in Indonesia and Zambia and our most recent collaboration with Danone (parent company of Dannon Yogurt here in the U.S.) is helping several projects in the Ukraine, including a dairy plant, a co-op farm to help sell the milk and more. Danone matched every gift made to this project dollar for dollar.
